One thing I'm learning in Valdosta...

is about military life. And I'm not claiming to know much! We live about 6 miles from Moody Air Force Base and as a result, our apartment complex is full of military people. We see that beloved camo every day! We had a special patriotic service on July 4th at church. When the Minister of Music asked all veterans and active duty personel to stand, I was overcome. The church was full and they were in uniform. In Americus, we have an amazing patriotic service; however the difference here is that the men who stood were my age. Whew...it got me thinking!!

Then I met my sweet 3rd graders and realized that I have 4 military kids in my class. I soon found out that one of my student's (let's call him "Mike") dad is currently deployed in Afghanistan. Mike talks about his daddy daily. We made a package for him and sent it over...our class knows him by name, because we talk about him so often.

In August, Mike wrote the following during a Writer's Workshop lesson:

"One night I was dreaming about my dad. he said to me, "Mike I want you to take good care of your brothers and your mom cause I'm going to Afganistan and helping the USA not get bomed, so I want you to take care of your self to, I'll come back in 6 months." I said, "Dad what happens if you get shot." "Then my boss will call mom, See you in 6 months."

This week, our class has been celebrating because Mike's Dad is coming home this week!!! He made an addition to the writing today...

"Six months later...Dad!!! You came back. The End!"

Pray for me and my sweet little ones as two daddy's leave after Christmas.

Oh my sweet Megan! I miss you like crazy! And what a beautiful writer you are. I just laughed and cried reading your santa blog and then the one about the military families. You are such a light for those precious children. I pray that daily they will feel different around you ...sense something special about you and see the love of Christ seeping from your life. You are placed just in that class with each little heart sovereignly placed under your care for "such a time as this." Be encouraged that your labor is so not in vain!!!!! Uhhh I so wish to see you and Chuck! WE were at the Georgia/Auburn game this week and couldn't help from searching the crowd hoping one of those people in the sea of red and black might be you :) send me your contact info again...got a new phone and lost all my pre-programed numbers. Its also Christmas card time again and I need your address! I am so glad to find your blog. I love you so much and thank God for your life and your laboring. Come see us!
XOXOXO Heather
